Like “Gulf Tea,” milder & sweeter, December 23, 2012

My best friend is from Saudi Arabia, and I have come to love the evening tradition of “Gulf Tea” or “Arabic Tea” and sugary dates every evening at sunset at her house. The scent of cardamom fills the entire home during the brewing of that tea. I purchased this Numi Cardamom Pu’erh to see if it was anything like the Arabic/Gulf Tea of my best friend’s home.

This is like a version of Arabic Tea more suited to an American palette, with the stronger sweet flavor of the Pu’erh dominating and a mild, pleasant flavor of green cardamom. When making a single cup, the aroma will not fill the house, but the scent of that one cup is enough to “take you back” and reminds easily of this comfort food tradition.

I would recommend this tea to anyone who likes cardamom and pu’erh, as it is a delightful and mild combination of both. While everyone recommends this tea to brighten your morning, I also highly suggest trying it after dinner, as it will help your meal digest and provide a soothing calm to welcome the evening.

Amazon – When are you going to start selling the Saudi-style, vacuum-packed “sugary” (Barhi) dates? They would be an amazing pairing with this Cardamom Pu’erh tea!!

The tea bag smelled amazing. Then I dropped it into a mug and poured hot water over it, and it suddenly smelled a bit funky. Then I remembered that Pu-erh always smells a bit funky, and so I put a lid on my mug and let it sit for a few minutes, until the vapors had dripped back in and my mug was not scorching to handle. Then I uncovered it and took a deep breath in of a lovely, earthy, gently spicy cup of goodness that made me go “that’s what I’m talking about…” Not only was the aroma and flavor delightful (yes, the funk was all gone), but the consistency of the tea was smooth and velvety, making this a rich, aromatic, comforting, pleasant cup of tea that I immediately fell in love with–and ordered two more boxes of. Pu-erh has so many health benefits, that at some point you’ll likely be looking for a good, easy one to try out. Make it this one. It’ll spoil you rotten on all the other pu’erhs for a while, but buy it anyway. Then sit back and enjoy the goodness. Cardamom Pu-erh Tea Bags, 16-Count

Pu-Erh is a unique and complex flavor – the cardamom balances and complements it nicely, April 23, 2013

I first discovered Pu-Erh by accident. Craving zero-calorie chocolate, I found Numi Organic Tea Chocolate Puerh, Full Leaf Black Tea, 16-Count Tea Bags (Pack of 2). I was wondering what was responsible for the amazing and deep flavor, and read up on the amazing tea known as Pu-Erh. For those who haven’t tried it, Pu-Erh is a deep and hearty tea with an earthy flavor. It is a chinese tea that is aged and fermented. As a result, the palate is incredibly complex – this is no Lipton black tea. If you like Assam or english-breakfast type teas, you will probably enjoy Pu-Erh. I immediately tried the pure Pu-Erh Numi Organic Tea Emperor’s Puerh, Full Leaf Black Tea, 16-Count Tea Bags (Pack of 2) to see what it tasted like without the chocolate, and found that while I liked the flavor of the pure tea, it certainly went well with extra flavorings.

As an avid fan of Chai, I like the flavor of Cardamom and thought I would try this Cardamom Pu-Erh. The bag has a light earthy aroma, and it brewed up quickly into a dark brew. Note that unlike the Chocolate Pu-Erh, there is not a list of many flavors. This is nothing but Cardamom and Pu-Erh, so it’s not a Chai but rather straight Pu-Erh with a little extra flavor.

The aroma seemed especially earthy, and I commented to my wife that it reminded me of the “the zoo”. Then again, all Pu-Erh has that musky smell, and the Cardamom likely muted it a bit. Aftering adding 2 splenda packets to the cup, I took a long sip and really enjoyed it. The cardamom adds a nice extra flavor to mellow out and sweeten the Pu-Erh a bit more. I took another whiff – I don’t know how I can dislike the smell but enjoy the taste, but that’s what happened.

Conclusion? I regularly enjoy Chocolate Pu-Erh, but I think Cardamom Pu-Erh might replace my Emperor’s Pu-Erh in my drinking rotation because I really did enjoy it and do recommend this tea. The two flavors balance themselves out nicely with the cardamom removing some bite from the Pu-Erh and making it quite a smooth drink.
