What Are the Benefits of Decaf Green Tea?

    By Brooke Williams, eHow Contributor

Green tea has many positive benefits, both physical and mental. Worldwide, people choose to drink tea for its calming and relaxing effects, as well as for detoxification.

The Chinese have been using green tea for more than 5,000 years to promote health in the mind and the body, according to Tea for Health. Because green tea was an expensive beverage thousands of years ago, it was typical for only the wealthy Chinese to consume the drink.

    Health Benefits
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, green tea has been shown to reduce cholesterol in the body. Also, with the consumption of green tea, weight loss and diabetes can be controlled or even prevented. And the medical center’s website says that by drinking large amounts of green tea, the body’s toxins are cleaned, which helps to prevent illnesses and diseases.

    Cancer Prevention
Green tea is composed of a high concentration of antioxidants called polyphenels, which are linked to giving the drink its positive health benefits, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Studies suggest that these polyphenels, if consumed, can decrease the risk of cancer and heart disease.

    Physical Effects
Positive side effects of drinking green tea, whether it’s decaffeinated or regular, including an energetic feeling, according to Green Tea Benefits. Because green tea can be used as a detoxification beverage, it is reported to leave people feeling refreshed.

    Decaf or Regular Tea?
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, how tea is fermented has a lot to do with the amount of polyphenols, or antioxidants, in the tea. If leaves are fermented, the polyphenol content is substantially low, and the caffeine content is high. Green tea is created with unfermented leaves. “Green tea has the highest polyphenol content while black tea has roughly two to three times the caffeine content of green tea,” the medical center states.

NOTE: I would recommend Yamamotoyama, Tazo Zen or Stash Premium green tea.
